For me, sport psychology is not just exclusive to athletes; its purpose can be transferred to multiple domains where the pressure to perform exists. What brings these domains together and where I believe sport psychology is most effective is by giving autonomy and raising awareness about the self and others through emotions, thoughts and behaviours.
There is a misconception that sport psychologists are used to 'fix issues' however my experience has shown that human performance can be optimised at different levels. For example, we can help bridge the gap between what is acceptable to become exceptional.
As a psychologist, the profession protects and prioritises wellbeing of each individual they work with. My work centres around forming trustworthy relationships and creating a safe space for people through open and honest discussions by working in line with the code of ethics governed by the British Psychological Society and Health and Care Professions Council.
